Do you think health and safety is all about paperwork and just ticking boxes?

I’m Alison, The Safety Elf, and I think it is all about PEOPLE – truly putting people’s physical and mental health, safety and wellbeing at the heart of your business.

That’s ticking boxes in a really good way!

Working with you to consider all aspects of your business – your people (your most valuable asset), your workplace, your organisation and your business activity

I work with all sizes of businesses, making health and safety useful, engaging and even fun!

(Fun might not be a word you expected to see used in the context of health and safety. It is a serious subject, but it doesn’t have to be boring!)

What do you need help with?

People often get in touch because;

  • A growing business means growing risks too, and having 5 or more employees changes requirements for H&S documentation

  • You ‘don’t know what you don’t know’

  • There is a skills gap to fill by upskilling and / or outsourcing

  • Need to know you are meeting your legal duties

  • And because there is no such thing as stupid question when it comes to health and safety!

How could it work?

You may need support for a specific project or training, or you may feel that ongoing support to develop your systems and skills is a better fit for you and your business, and I am happy to work with you to develop the best fit for you.

We will review what you already have in place and identify any Health and Safety Essentials – those aspects that I see as an essential part of health and safety management for your organisation, your people and your workplace and should be addressed as a priority.

We will also identify recommended future steps – these are aspects I would highly recommend but can be looked at as part of an on-going action plan.

I offer retainer packages for organisations who would like an ongoing partnership while spreading the cost of working with me, agreeing on a prioritised one or two year action plan for example.

What does success look like?

Working alongside you to upskill you and your team so you are all ready to make good, informed health and safety decisions on a day-to-day basis.

Building, implementing and reviewing robust systems and ensure health and safety remains a live topic in your business.

We will keep the degree to which you need my input under review - I’m not trying to build ‘dependency’ – so we will plan to reduce my input to the right level for you as your systems and confidence develop.

The business case

Have you thought about why health and safety is so important?

There are physical, behavioural and knowledge benefits, good financial reasons as well as workplace culture and legal positives too

WHY HEALTH AND SAFETY MATTERS

There are many benefits of having the correct health and safety set up in your workplace. It doesn’t have to be a huge task but you do need to have something in place to benefit your people and your business.

DUTY OF CARE

Ensuring you have a safe place of work reduces the likelihood of incidents, illness and injury, and keeps your workforce protected, engaged and productive. It also enhances your reputation and reduces the risk of prosecution, fines and reputational damage, not to mention other costs like sick pay, losing experienced workers, and business disruption.

IT’S THE LAW

Health and safety legislation in the UK sets out the expectations both for employers and employees, and the legal consequences for non-compliance, including prohibition and improvement notices, Fee for Intervention and prosecution with the potential for substantial fines and prison sentences.

SAVE MONEY!

With the correct health and safety processes, you could benefit from lower insurance costs. It also means you can avoid direct costs like insurance claims, damage to equipment, sick pay and legal costs, as well as hidden costs like product or process liability claims, poor corporate image, losing customers or reduced productivity from a disengaged workforce.
